Society of Forty Men and Eight Horses initiates in prisoner costumes and pillory, 1949
Stuart Chief of Police, Roy Baker, posed in a pillory, wearing a prisoner costume as part of the initiation for the Society of Forty Men and Eight Horses. Sign attached to the pillory reads "I drink whiskey (Good Whiskey)." The men standing around him are also in costume, and two wear military hats. The Society of Forty Men and Eight Horses, founded in 1920, is an honor society for the American Legion, and members must be honorably discharged veterans and invited to join. The ceremony to initiate a new member was known as a "wreck." Scan from low quality print. -
