  • Studio portrait of Drew W. King Jr., former Stuart mayor (1949-1951) and realtor and owner of Stuart Hardware Company.
  • Studio portrait of Charles Kindred, owner of the Ideal Sport Shop in Stuart. Kindred also worked as a teacher at Martin County High School.

The two men are identified as the owners of the store, Irving Kanarek (left) and Max Auerbach (right). Irving Kanarek also served as the mayor of Stuart in 1954. The expanded Stuart Department store opened in the downtown area in 1954 with entrances on both Flagler and St. Lucie avenues. The Stuart Department store was closed in 1984, after more than 30 years in business.

  • Portrait of Joseph Verner Reed in front of a building and landscape bushes. Reed founded the Hobe Sound Company, which developed Jupiter Island and the Jupiter Island Club. Reed and his wife, Permelia Reed are celebrated for their conservation efforts, giving away the north end of Jupiter Island as a nature preserve. Reed was also one of the founders of Martin County Hospital.
  • Myrtle Mabel Dyer (1900-1992) at the annual meeting of the Early Settlers of Lower Indian River meeting. Dyer was a graduate of FSU and Palmer College of Chiropractic. She took over Dyer's Dry Goods (established 1914) in 1925 and managed it until 1980, when it closed.
  • Ben F. Eckess (1873-1937) came to Stuart in 1913 from West Virginia, and went to work in Stanley Kitching's store, later acquiring a half interest in the Kitching & Eckess Department Store and ultimately taking over the business. Published in the Stuart News (9 Jan 1964).
  • William J. "Fingy" Conners (1857-1929), originally from Buffalo, New York, Conners was a developer in Buffalo and West Palm Beach. In Florida, he is known for building Conners Highway (U.S. 441), the first road between West Palm Beach and Okeechobee. He also was central in the development of the Everglades and Okeechobee, was a vice president of the Southern Sugar Company, chairman of the Great Lakes Transit Corporation, and publisher of the Buffalo Courier Express. Published in the Stuart Chamber of Commerce booklet, "Agriculture in Martin County" in 1926.
