The Leightons moved from Pittsburgh to Palm City in 1914, having bought 20 acres, sight unseen, from Charles Chillingworth and the Palm Beach Land Company. -

Mary Nelson was Martin Memorial Hospital's first Supervisor of Nurses, where she worked as a nurse for 19 years. She married former Stuart mayor Phil W. Pence in 1948. -
Reed family of Jupiter Island, c. 1965
Joseph Verner Reed (1902-1973) and wife Permelia P. Reed (1906-1994) with four young men and a dog. Joseph Verner Reed founded the Hobe Sound Company, which developed Jupiter Island and the Jupiter Island Club. Reed and his wife, Permelia, are celebrated for their conservation efforts, having donated the north end of Jupiter Island as a nature preserve. Reed was also one of the founders of Martin County Hospital.Tags Dogs -
