Stuart's Fourth of July parade float, sponsored by the American Legion Auxiliary (Harold Johns Unit No. 62). Three figures wear costumes inspired by revolutionary war uniforms and they play a fife and drums. The man playing the drums in the middle is Capt. Francis A. Adams.
Charles Richard "Dick" Ashley came to Stuart in about 1937. He married Emma Taylor in 1939 and they had three daughters. According to his obituary in the Stuart News (29 Aug 1990) he served in the 82nd Airborne Division, receiving the Purple Heart for service during Operation Marke Garden in Holland in 1944. In 1946, he and father-in-law John E. Taylor opened Taylor-Ashley Real Estate and Insurance.
