Title
Cynthia Burnette Haney, c. 1910
Description
Cynthia Burnette (1840-1932) was a national leader of the Woman's Christian Temperance Union, and was assigned to start chapters in Tampa, West Palm, and Ft. Pierce in 1897. At that time, she also visited her niece, Edith Miller, on the north side of the St. Lucie River. There she was introduced to the local doctor, Dr. Horace John Haney, whom she married in 1897 and divorced in 1903. She then moved to Stuart, where she became very active in the community, helping to establish the library at the Woman's Club, tutoring, and writing for several local and regional newspapers. In 1920, a traffic circle in downtown Stuart was named in her honor. In 1929, the Florida Newspaper News recognized her as the state's oldest active newspaper woman at 89.
