Duke Merwin, 1943
Arnold Dumond "Duke" Merwin (1904-1991). Published in Sandra Thurlow's book, Historic Jensen and Eden on Florida's Indian River (2004) with the caption: "Arnold Dumond Merwin was born in his grandmother's home in New Hampshire but was convinced he had been conceived at Edenlawn Plantation. He returned to Eden in 1908, when he was four years old, and considered it his home forever after." -

Arthur H. "Phil" Phillips, longtime partner of Duke Merwin. Together they developed Edenlawn into a prominent fernery, starting in the 1930s, then continuing after WWII. Phil was awarded the Bronze Star in WWII. In the 1940s, they focused on making Edenlawn a resort with a successful restaurant. -

John Miller moved to Eden with his young family in 1887, and for the next sixty years lived in the house he built with his own hands. For a time, he operated an Indian River schooner, the 'Maud Miller' and, through the years, built hundreds of boats for the commercial fishing industry." -
