Description
Sisters Vermelle (bottom) and Hannah Fulton pose together next to a boat dock. According to a note on the back of the photograph, Hannah was 13 years old at the time, which would make Vermelle around 21 years old. Both sisters were long time Palm City residents. Vermelle started her career as a Palm City nursery schoolteacher and later took over the duties of the Palm City postmaster from the girls' mother, Ailene Fulton, who, according to the Stuart News (15 Sep 1985), served as the first postmistress in the country, starting in 1929.
