Item

Title

Maribel Plantation house, c. 1942

Description

Ruxton Plantation house. This property was located south of Eden, which is in the modern-day Jensen Beach area. Built by Sarah and John Lucas in the late 1800s. The Lucas family had the lumber for the house pre-cut in Baltimore and transported to the Eden area via ship. They named the property after their hometown of Ruxton, Maryland. The Lucas family grew pineapples.

It was purchased by Helen Saunders in 1899 and became one of the largest and most successful pineapple farms in the area.

The plantation was later sold in 1907 to Charles Edason and renamed "Maribel Plantation" for his wife, Marie.

Louis Bell Edason inherited the property after his father died in 1941. The house was damaged in the 1949 hurricane and lost the upper story. In about 1974, he renamed the property "Candy Bell Plantation" after his second wife, Constance.

In 1993, the house was moved to the rear of the property.
