Item
Title
Flagler Avenue, the block north of St. Lucie Avenue, c. 1925
Description
Includes on the far right, Kitching & Eckess's store (opened 1922). The Peacock Arcade (later the Victory Hotel) would be built in early 1926 next door.
Labels written by unknown hand identifies some of the buildings, including Capt. Thomas Hogarth's house (where the Peacock Arcade would be built; label also indicates the building was moved and used by Stanley Kitching), Morris John's store, Broster and Susan Kitching, and Parks Store.
This is a portion of a photo published in the Stuart News, 25th Historical Edition (9 Nov 1950), with the caption "Before the boomtime building of the Victory Hotel the riverfront home of Stanley Kitching was viewed from Flagler as shown above. The two-story building to the north housed a drygoods store and later a poolroom and has since been razed. Shortly after this picture was taken Flagler was widened which entirely changed the picture of this main street. All buildings (except the Stuart Department Store then owned by Kitching) had to be moved back and several were torn down."
Low quality scan.
