Henry Clay Rue, c. 1909
Henry and Harriet Rue and their adult sons Charles and Fred relocated from Michigan to Stuart in 1924. They purchased the Butter Kist Shoppe on Flagler Avenue, next door to the Feroe Building, and renamed it Rue's Sweet Shop, which continued operating until 1944. The building was demolished in the 1980s and in 2024 it is a gated courtyard garden. -
Charles Henry Rue, c. 1917
Charles H. Rue and his father moved to Stuart in 1924 and purchased Rue's Sweet Shop. He worked as manager or salesman for several businesses through the years including Texaco, Pontiac, Firestone, Luckhardt Construction, and the Stuart News. He was also an experienced carpenter, and designed and constructed a watchtower at Hobe Sound beach during WWII. He also served on the Martin County School Board in the 1930s. -
Lois Evelyn Root Rue, c. 1917
Lois moved to Stuart from Michigan in 1925 with her two daughters, Leila and Leona, shortly after her husband Charles H. Rue and his father had opened Rue's Sweet Shop. She was active in the PTA and the Eastern Star and was a co-founder of the local chapter of the Order of the Rainbow for Girls. -

Stuart Band in the 1926 parade. Charles H. Rue was significant in organizing the Stuart high school and municipal bands. In celebration of the 1925 establishment of Martin County, the town of Stuart hosted a series of events on 28 and 29 January 1926, including a large parade.
