Fish display portrait on Jensen Bridge, c. 1930
T. J. and Katie O'Stean hold up a large fish hung from a stick on the Jensen Bridge. T. J. served as the bridge tender from 1927 to 1932. They lived in a house on the bridge and in addition to operating the drawbridge, they also sold drinks and fishing bait from their home. Poor quality copy. -

Flamingo Hotel, c. 1955
The Hotel Flamingo was located in the Krueger Building, a shopping center on Old Dixie Highway, which ran between 2nd Street (Joan Jefferson Way in 2024) and California Avenue, along the railroad tracks. It was built by Albert Paul "Bert" Krueger and completed in January 1925; the building was demolished in 1993. The Hotel Flamingo was originally named the Cortez Hotel, but was renovated and renamed in 1941. Also visible is Western Union. -
Florida and Jack Speirs with Kitching children, c. 1906
Published in Sandra Thurlow's book, Stuart on the St. Lucie (p. 99) with the caption: "After the death of their mother, Martha [Maskery] Kitching, in 1906, 9-year-old [Ladye] Agnes and 13-year-old Sylvia lived with their sister Florida and her husband, Jack ["J.A.Y."] Speirs, in Stuart. Jack, a contractor, built the Osceola Building on Osceola Street at St. Lucie Avenue as well as several fine residences that still stand. Florida, as city clerk from 1923 to 1927, was the first woman to hold public office in Stuart. (Susan Barker Leek)"
Ladye Agnes and Sylvia were the children of Sylvanus and Martha Kitching; Sylvanus was the brother of Walter and Broster Kitching. -
Florida Flower Assoc. Inc. truck terminal, 1957
The Florida Flower Association leased the old Hayes Motor Co. building located at 4th St. (Ocean Boulevard) and Old Dixie in Stuart as a terminal for shipping flowers grown by local farmers. Painted on the building is "Say it with flowers from Florida" and "Florida Flower Ass'n. Inc. Truck Terminal." -
Florida flower growers auction, 1963
First auction held for flower growers in Florida. The auction took place in November of 1963 at the Armellini building on US 1. According to the Stuart News (31 Oct 1963), the auction was sponsored by Jack and Barbara Grier "to provide all Florida growers with a new sales medium that offers each grower a wider range of markets for his crops" and buyers registered from all over the country to attend.Tags Auctions
