Float in parade celebrating establishment of Martin County, 1926
Parade float of covered car, bathtub on back with young Black child in it. Sign on side: "We believe in Stuart Clean-Up. Let this be the only Black spot in town. Stuart Transfer Co." Stuart Transfer Company opened in 1925 on Flagler Avenue, then moved to the Lyric Theatre building in March 1926. They were a hauling company.
In celebration of the 1925 establishment of Martin County, the town of Stuart hosted a series of events on 28 and 29 January 1926, including a large parade. Governor John Wellborn Martin attended as a special guest. -
Construction of the Pelican Hotel, 1924
Partially constructed building and several cars. Signs: The Pelican Hotel being financed by $125,000 issue of 8% first mortgage bonds sold by Southland Bond Mortgage Co. Also, R.C. Miller & Co. General Contractors, architects Pfeiffer & O'Reilly. -
The Messenger building, 1925
Large building with signs: "Stuart Messenger" and "Messenger Building." The newspaper Stuart Messenger was founded by A.K. Wilson on 5 November 1915; in March 1917, it merged with the Stuart Times (the first newspaper in Stuart, having been founded on 18 April 1913 by Will Hawley Stevens). It continued printing under the banner of the Stuart Messenger until October 1925, when it was purchased by the Clyma family, this building on First and Albany was built, and it became the Stuart Daily News. -
