Stuart school, Feb. 1912
Several children on stoop of school. Built in 1908, the building was then used as the Martin County courthouse from 1925 to 1937. Published in the Stuart News, 25th Historical Edition (9 Nov 1950) with the caption "This front portion of the present county court house formerly was the Stuart school until the present school plant [sic] further east on 4th St. was erected in 1926. Primary grades used the small building at right." -
The Lighthouse Restaurant, 1948
Long building with cars parked under eave. Located a few hundred yards from the north end of the bridge across the St. Lucie River on Federal Highway, it was originally Speedy's Garage, built in about 1923 by Harry Miles Speedy. A small marina and a decorative lighthouse were added soon after. After being remodeled in 1933, it became Speedy's Inn. In 1937, after ownership changed hands several times, it was remodeled and became the Lighthouse Restaurant. After a fire in 1956, the business reopened in a one-story building. It was demolished in 1962 as part of the widening of U.S. 1 and Roosevelt Bridge. -
Stuart Hotel, c. 1948
Hotel and restaurant. Originally built in about 1891 by Broster Kitching (and then moved by 1898) and added onto extensively over the years. Demolished in 1966. -

Sign: Gilbert's Bar Station, United States Coast Guard, Martin County Historical Society 1955. House of Refuge at Gilbert's Bar was added to the National Register of Historic Places in 1974. -
Flagler Avenue, Stuart, Florida, c. 1945
Stores along Flagler Avenue, including Stuart Department Store, Victory Hotel and Marine Room and Beach Club, and Johns Dry Cleaners.
The arcade building was remodeled and renamed "Victory Hotel" in 1942, and the Marine Room and Beach Club opened in 1944. Stuart's Department Store operated from 1938 to 1984, and was formerly Eckess and Kitching & Eckess. -

Two boats approaching two boat houses. One boat is from Washington D.C. tows a dingy named "Buccaneer" and the other boat is named "Prowl About (Stuart, Fla.)" Both fly a U.S. Yacht Ensign flag. The boathouse on the left was constructed by Hubert W. Bessey. -

Harry Beckman, of Philadelphia, owned and operated the Stuart Marine Service between 1933 and 1946. Located at the juncture of the north and south forks of the St. Lucie River.
