Item

Title

The Lighthouse Restaurant, 1948

Description

Long building with cars parked under eave. Located a few hundred yards from the north end of the bridge across the St. Lucie River on Federal Highway, it was originally Speedy's Garage, built in about 1923 by Harry Miles Speedy. A small marina and a decorative lighthouse were added soon after. After being remodeled in 1933, it became Speedy's Inn. In 1937, after ownership changed hands several times, it was remodeled and became the Lighthouse Restaurant. After a fire in 1956, the business reopened in a one-story building. It was demolished in 1962 as part of the widening of U.S. 1 and Roosevelt Bridge.
