The Havana Special train on Long Key Viaduct, c. 1970
The Havana Special train. Caption: "Sightseers gather on the observation deck of the Havana Special as it crosses Long Key Viaduct in 1912. The boat-train ran express from New York to Miami and then as a Local to Key West. At first travelers had to change to a Key West-Havana passenger steamer. Later three large steel ferries took the Pullman cars all the way to Cuba. The Havana Special boomed during prohibition but was cut to one trip a day in the '30's. Florida East Coast Railway train travels on railroad bridge. Caption: "The most beautiful viaduct consists of 100 semi-circular graceful arches, each 50 feet wide. It was one of the first great bridges to be built of concrete. At the north end of this viaduct is Long Key, where the famous fishing camp by that name is located." -

Florida East Coast Railway train travels on railroad bridge. Caption: "Stretching almost seven miles across the open sea, this is the longest bridge in the F. E. C. Ry.'s Over-Sea Extension between the mainland of Florida and Key West. It consists of steel deck girders anchored on huge concrete piers. In this bridge there are 316 eighty-foot spans, 19 sixty-foot spans, finished off with 210 fifty-three foot concrete arches at the sound end." -
