Mary Loleen Stokes, c. 1970
Mary Loleen Stokes was very active in many of Stuart's civic organizations and contributed to many local projects and charities. Mrs. Stokes ran both the John W. Stokes Foundation, created by her husband, and the Mary Lolene Foundation. Both foundations greatly impacted the Martin County community, donating funds to the library, Martin Memorial Hospital, and for scholarships benefitting many students in the area. The Soroptimist Club of Stuart named Mary Loleen Stokes a "Woman of Achievement" in 1961. She was a trustee at the Martin County Historical Society, the first female director of the Stuart Chamber of Commerce, and a long-time member of the Women's Club of Stuart.Tags Florida-Stuart -
C. Gale Kiplinger, 1973
C. Gale Kiplinger sits at a desk in a wood paneled office. Gale Kiplinger worked as an engineering consultant for Allied Chemical Corporation. After retiring from the chemical industry in 1958, Gale Kiplinger worked with his brother, Willard Kiplinger, on projects to expand the Kiplinger Washington Editors publishing company. Gale stayed on at the publishing firm, consulting on financial investments, which included the purchasing of land in Martin County. Gale made Stuart his permanent home in 1970 after spending many winters in the area and was involved in many local civic organizations such as the Men's Garden Club of Martin County and the Stuart Rotary Club. -
Virginia Forrest, 1973
Virginia Forrest sits on a porch railing with an unidentified building visible in the background. Virginia was an avid environmental and conservation advocate known nationwide for initiating a campaign to save the American bald eagle from extinction. Forrest split her time between her winter home in Stuart, Florida and Pennsylvania. She is remembered locally for creating the Martin County Conservation Alliance and for her work to protect Florida's wetlands. She was the first woman to be awarded the Florida governor’s conservation award and the Florida Audubon Society named her the Bald Eagle Person of the Year in 1976. Virginia Forrest Beach located on Hutchinson Island was named in her honor.Tags Florida-Stuart -
Wilbur Forrest, 1973
Wilbur Forrest stands in front of many tropical plants and trees. Forrest was a newspaper reporter for several different papers and worked as the assistant editor and director at the New York Herald Tribune. According to the New York Times, Forrest was the first to report (via a telephone line near Le Bourget airport) that Charles Lindbergh had landed in Paris after his Trans-Atlantic flight in 1927.
