Description

Mary Loleen Stokes was very active in many of Stuart's civic organizations and contributed to many local projects and charities. Mrs. Stokes ran both the John W. Stokes Foundation, created by her husband, and the Mary Lolene Foundation. Both foundations greatly impacted the Martin County community, donating funds to the library, Martin Memorial Hospital, and for scholarships benefitting many students in the area. The Soroptimist Club of Stuart named Mary Loleen Stokes a "Woman of Achievement" in 1961. She was a trustee at the Martin County Historical Society, the first female director of the Stuart Chamber of Commerce, and a long-time member of the Women's Club of Stuart.
