Description
The original site of the Stuart Department Store located in the Stanley Kitching Building on Flagler Avenue. The building previously housed the Kitching & Eckess Store from the 1920s and '30s. The Stuart Department Store moved to a new location nearby in 1954.
Published in the Stuart News, 25th Historical Edition (9 Nov 1950) with the caption "The home of Stuart Department Store was built by Commodore Stanley Kitching in 1921. The firm, which was a direct outgrowth of the little business started in 1902, did business as Kitching & Eckess until the passing of B.F. Eckess in the late 1930s. The business was purchased by O.S. Kanarek in 1938 and the name changed to Stuart Department Store."
