Ernest Stypmann, c. 1880
Description
Portrait of Ernest Stypmann (1840-1918), who first came to the St. Lucie River region as part of a U.S. Geodetic Survey crew. After homesteading near Sebastian, he then purchased land and settled in what would become Stuart in about 1882 with his brother Otto. In 1897, Ernest platted the Town of Potsdam, later renamed Stuart.
