Description

Two Junior Conservation League members release sea turtles into the water. Similar photo published in the Miami Herald, 29 Sept 1961. This photo published in the Stuart News (8 July 2012) with the caption: "This photograph, taken in October 1961, shows future sheriff Bob Crowder (right) and Robert Routa releasing sea turtles hatched and raised in Ross Witham's 'Head Start' program at Gilbert's Bar House of Refuge. The young men were officers of the Stuart Junior Conservation Club, a chapter of the Florida Youth Conservation League." Florida governor Warren signed the charter for the boys only Florida Junior Conservation League sponsored by the Florida Game and Fresh Water Commission (now known as the Florida Fish and Wildlife Commission), in August 1952. In 1954, the Stuart Junior Conservation League was organized. The group is later referred to as "Florida Youth Conservation League" then "Youth Conservation Club."
