Description
Studio portrait of Costella Williams. Williams was a teacher for 46 years, many of which were spent in Martin County schools. Williams taught at Olympia and Hobe Sound elementary schools before she became the principal at the Salerno Colored School in 1943, where she served until 1963.
Williams taught at this one-room schoolhouse in Port Salerno for 20 years. The schoolhouse building was later used for art classes at Murray Middle School. In 1995, the one-room schoolhouse/art room was named in her honor (Costella Williams Learning Center). Williams was also a founding member of St. Paul's AME Church and she taught Sunday school there for many years.
