Item

Title

E. A. Menninger, c. 1930

Description

E. A. Menninger in front of an unidentified building or house. Note written on the photo reads "E. A. Menninger- the 'goat' of most of Harry's…signs in the P.O. arcade." Menninger owned the Stuart News (originally the Stuart Daily News) from 1928 to 1958. In 1958, Menninger sold the paper and split off the commercial printing side of the business to create the Southeastern Printing Company. He also served as the president of several local organizations including the Martin County Chamber of Commerce, Rotary Club, and the Florida Press Association. Menninger earned the moniker "Flowering Tree Man" after writing many books and articles about tropical and subtropical flowering trees and vines. Menninger is also remembered for his conservation advocacy often using his paper to editorialize about environmental issues. Menninger was the driving force behind the creation of many of the public parks in our area, including Stuart's Memorial Park and Jonathan Dickinson State Park.
