Item

Title

Osceola Building, 1923

Description

The Osceola Building (built 1921) at the corner of Osceola Street and St. Lucie Avenue (61 SW Osceola Street in 2023), Stuart Florida. Businesses visible include the Sanitary Barbershop (1921-1925) and Bailey's 5-10-25. Also visible is the corner of the St. Lucie Hotel Annex (moved from this site in 1925). Published in Alice Lockhardt's book, Stuart : Images of America with the caption: "The Fuge Building (Osceola Building) was one story with 13-foot ceilings and measured 36 feet wide by 65 feet deep. It featured two modern fireproof vaults for the Bank of Stuart, which occupied the center section. The vaults may have given a sense of security, but on May 12, 1922, the notorious Ashley Gang robbed the bank for a second time, the first being in February 1915 in its former location across the street."
