Item

Title

Katie Hamilton Dyer with son, c. 1899

Description

Published in Sandra Thurlow's book, Stuart on the St. Lucie (p. 73), with the caption: " Katie Hamilton taught in the settlement that was to become Stuart before it even had a name. She married Will Dyer, a local pineapple grower, and became the mother of four children, traveling to Cocoa by sailboat for their births. This photograph, with son Jack, was taken around 1899. Adorning hats with feathers became so fashionable at the turn of the century that Florida's wading bird population was almost depleted."
