Item

Title

Jensen Beach Bridge reopening ceremony, 1949

Description

Deputy Sheriff Reuben Sharp, Anne Langford, Florida Senator Evans Crary, Sr.. George Keith and Commissioner R. R. Tilton pose on the Jensen Beach Bridge for a reopening ceremony sponsored by the Jensen Beach Business Men's Association. The bridge had to be closed due to damage from the August 1949 hurricane.

According to a Stuart News article about the bridge ceremony, penned by Zola C. Swarthout (15 Dec 1949), the quintet seen here participated in a make-shift ribbon cutting ceremony as follows "...[they] lifted aside the tied Calcutta fishing poles which had been supplied as a barrier to the entrance of the bridge in lieu of the customary ribbon, and the group split up into the five official cars and started across the bridge, paced by Mrs. (Laura) Christian (Bridge tender) and (Harry) Blotner (assistant tender) on their motor scooter."
