Description
Published in the Stuart News (28 Oct 1954) with the following caption "Chinchilla Project Under Way Here. Glenn DeBerry (left) looks over three of the collection of chinchillas being boarded here while his brother-in-law, Harris Lowery, Jr. (right) holds one of the small, fur-bearing animals." DeBerry and Lowery also partnered with Charles N. Roberts to start the Gold Coast Chinchilla Ranch, registering the business name in December of 1954 and setting up shop in the back of the Stuart Roofing Company building. To start up the business of breeding chinchilla as pets and/ or for their pelts, the trio purchased twelve chinchillas from an award winning line of the chinchillas and had them flown from California to Stuart. They planned to build up their stock from twelve to 200 chinchillas over the course of eight years and expected to start bringing in between five and ten thousand dollars annually with very little overhead, as the cost of keeping the animals was quite minimal. Gold Coast Chinchilla Ranch is not mentioned in the paper after 1954.
