Title
Tugboats run aground, 1953
Description
Photograph taken by Earl Dyer Ricou and published in the Stuart News (17 Dec 1953) with a caption titled "Boat Traffic Fouled Up At Palm City By Mud." In the background, a small tugboat leads a dredger to the area. In December of 1953, excessive discharge from the St. Lucie Canal created mud shoals making for shallow waters and subsequent waterway traffic issues near Palm City. The Army Corps of Engineers hired contractors to dredge the area and along the St. Lucie River to alleviate the problem in early 1954.
