Title
Walter Kitching's second store and delivery truck, 1916
Description
Walter Kitching (1846-1932) immigrated to the U.S. in 1867 and settled in Florida in about 1883. In 1887 he started a business delivering goods to settlers along Indian River. In 1894, he and wife Emma Michaels Kitching built a home in Stuart and grew pineapples and fruit. In 1897, he opened a general store on what's now Flagler Avenue near the river. In 1914 he built this second store, on U.S. 1 at West First Street. It included the town's first cold storage and soda fountain; this building was destroyed by a hurricane in 1928.
