Description
Man identified as Mr. Parks on the back of the photograph, sits in a wheelbarrow. The man in the wheelbarrow is likely George W. Parks Sr. (1876-1943), who opened the George Parks General Merchandise Store (Stuart Heritage Museum building). A campaign poster for Fred P. Cone is attached to wheelbarrow as it was wheeled around on election day, November 3, 1936, after Fred P. Cone won the race for governor of Florida. Cone served as Florida's governor from January of 1937 through January of 1941. According to a note on the back of the photo, George Parks won a bet that Cone would win the election and the loser of the bet had to push the winner around in a wheelbarrow on election day. View of H. C. Rue Sweet Shop in Stuart in the background.
