Pineapple packing factory, 1922
Item
Title
Pineapple packing factory, 1922
Description
Located on the north shore of the St. Lucie River, this building was originally a residence, then expanded to be an ice plant. By 1912, R.A. Hammond and Harry Dutton converted it to the Florida Freezer and Fertilizer Company, which froze and shipped fish and ground the unusable portions into fertilizer. However, sharks destroyed the fishing nets and the business floundered. In the 1920s, Carroll Dunscombe used the building as a pineapple packing plant until hurricanes and a fire in 1928 left the building abandoned. Labeled "Ale House and Pineapple Factory, Gosling."
