Pitchford tourist camp cottages, c. 1955
Pitchford Camp cottages. Pitchford camp was built in 1920 by Joseph J. Pitchford and brother Blount on Old Dixie Highway in Jensen, it was later expanded and managed by his sons, especially William. By the mid-1930s, visitors could rent a cabin, pitch a tent, or reside in their own trailers. There was a pier, boats for rent, a bath house, laundry, and recreational activities. -

Ruth and Fred Hall's first home and store in Stuart. The St. Lucie Auto Camp was located on Dixie Highway across from MLK Blvd. Opened in 1924, its name was changed in 1936 to Stuart Auto Camp. Auto camps offered rental cottages with separate facilities for showers, bathrooms, and laundry, as well as a filling station and dance hall. -
