Cypress Lodge, c. 1940
Cypress Lodge, front and back. Built in 1936 by Paul Moffett Hoenshel (1889-1966), who was also the manager of the Phipps Estate between 1927 and 1944. He and his family operated the Cypress Lodge from 1936, with his wife as chef. In WWII, rationing of gasoline ended much of the tourist trade and the Hoenshels moved to Stuart. -

Three women pose at a Stuart chrysanthemum flower farm. Message written on back of postcard reads "Greeting to You, Vern. How are you? These chrysanthemums are raised just north of Stuart which is 11 miles north of us. The stretch of there (sic) flowers is very beautiful. At night, they have lights all around the whole lots with net covering all over the top. It is a lovely sight especially at night with the lights on. I'll bet your gardens are beautiful now. Hope you keep [?] Vern, you have so much to do. We both send our love, Chas & Adele." -

Clifton W. "Possum" Long kneels among the plants at Possum's Nursery on Hibiscus Avenue in Stuart. Possum Long was a Martin County High School agricultural teacher in the 1940s. His property is now owned by the Martin County Audubon Society. -
