Paul Mahan wears beekeeping gear and examines one of his beehives at his Hobe Sound farm. In addition to beekeeping and keeping an organic farm, Paul Mahan also served as the Hobe Sound postmaster for over 30 years.
Several women, including Clarinda Coggshall (on left) stand between rows of beehive boxes. Two male beekeepers with netting attached to their hats are also in view. Older beekeeper standing behind the women is Col. O. O. Poppleton, a well-known expert beekeeper. Poppleton moved to the Stuart area in 1895 and maintained bee colonies from Ft. Pierce to Key West. His colonies were producing 15 tons of honey by 1909 and his bee keeping expertise earned him the nickname, "Bee King of Florida."
