Flag pole decorated with Christmas tree and line of flags, 1918
Line of flags hung across square on Flagler Avenue; visible is the train station, the Stuart Mercantile Co., and the Feroe building with the post office and Florida Land Company. This community tree was celebrated shortly before Christmas and was two trees lashed to the flagpole in the town square (Flagler Avenue at St. Lucie) and decorated with electric bulbs in many colors, tinsel, and oranges. A line of flags includes the Stuart Community Service Flag, with 40 stars, of which one was silver and one gold. During the dedication ceremony, children sang and a telegram from Santa was read, and afterward the adults had a dance at the Lyric. -
Dedication of the flag pole, 1918
Erected 12 January 1918 in the middle of Flagler Avenue between the train station and the Feroe building. Visible here are the second Lyric Theatre and the Stuart Mercantile building, with cars and crowds watching a speaker.
Published in the Stuart News, 25th Historical Edition (9 Nov 1950) with the caption "Looking South down Flagler Ave. (before it was widened during the boom of the 1920s) the center of town looked like this. The occasion was a dedication of the new flagpole from which Old Glory proudly flew until a storm demolished the pole." -
