McFarlan (1843–1914), and cousin Louis Cass McFarlan (1850-1913) and his wife Lorena Maule McFarlan (1873-1962) and young son were regular winter visitors to Stuart from their home in Pennsylvania, between 1895 through about 1910. Both William, a retired merchant, and Louis, a cloth merchant, purchased several properties in Stuart between 1904 and 1907.

William first wintered in Rockledge, Florida, but found the fishing in Stuart to be superior. -
