  • Photographs and record card of Rosenwald Schools in Stuart, Florida. The school is referred to as the Stuart School, the Stewart School, and the Martin County Training School. The initials "C.T.S." on the record card may refer to "county training school."

Booker T. Washington of the Tuskegee Institute and Julius Rosenwald, philanthropist and president of Sears Roebuck, built state-of-the art schools for African American children across the South. The effort has been called the most important initiative to advance Black education in the early 20th century. Rosenwald Schools were built through matching funds and community partnerships that reshaped education across the American southeast during the early twentieth century.

The Rosenwald Fund Collection is held by Fisk University and available for searching [Jan 2026] at https://rosenwald.fisk.edu/s/rosenwald-fund-collection/page/home

  • Works Progress Administration's Historical Records Survey Church Inventory Forms 1939-1940 for Martin County churches, with introduction, "Brief History of the Florida Church Archives Inventory." (Florida Memory)

Forms include self-reported information about each church, including location, race of membership, date organized, denomination, and description of current records. Some entries are free written histories rather than forms. Also available (as well as other counties) online at https://www.floridamemory.com/discover/historical_records/churchrecords/

Note: These forms are the history of the church, not necessarily the church building. "Const'd" probably means "constituted" (i.e. when the congregation was organized), not "constructed."
