Campaign for governor, 1936
Man identified as Mr. Parks on the back of the photograph, sits in a wheelbarrow. The man in the wheelbarrow is likely George W. Parks Sr. (1876-1943), who opened the George Parks General Merchandise Store (Stuart Heritage Museum building). A campaign poster for Fred P. Cone is attached to wheelbarrow as it was wheeled around on election day, November 3, 1936, after Fred P. Cone won the race for governor of Florida. Cone served as Florida's governor from January of 1937 through January of 1941. According to a note on the back of the photo, George Parks won a bet that Cone would win the election and the loser of the bet had to push the winner around in a wheelbarrow on election day. George W. Parks, Sr. sits in wheelbarrow near a postal and telegraph storefront in Stuart after Fred P. Cone was elected governor of Florida on November 3, 1936. Parks won a bet that Cone would win the election and as a result, the loser of the bet had to push the winner (Parks) around town. -

Portrait of Anna Underwood Viles taken at the Bay Tree Lodge in Sewall's Point. Bay Tree Lodge was built by James Viles (Anna's husband), an industrialist from Chicago as a winter home for the couple. After the death of her husband in 1919, Anna no longer wanted the home, and it was subsequently sold in 1923.Tags Umbrellas
