This photograph was probably taken in 1918 when Earl J. Ricou served in the Coast Guard on Hutchinson Island." -

Published in Sandra Thurlow's book, US Life-Saving Service: Florida's East Coast, with the caption "The boathouse on the Indian River at Gilbert's Bar House of Refuge protected sailboats when they were the only mode of transportation. The shed to its right was a workshop for master boatbuilder Hubert Bessey, who was keeper from 1890 until 1900. The boathouse at left housed a small boat provided by the US Life-Saving Service. This photograph was taken after 1911 when the house of refuge was modified with upper story windows."
