  • The Big Store shop, owned by Stanley Kitching. Building on the right may be the George W. Parks General Merchandise store.

Stanley Kitching first opened a small general store on Railroad Avenue (Flagler Avenue) around 1902. It appears that the business moved to the larger building seen in this photograph around 1913 as advertisements first started running in the local newspapers for "The Big Store" at that time. According to an announcement in the Stuart News (20 Oct 1921), ownership of the Big Store was transferred in 1921 to B. F. Eckess, who had managed the store for years, and the business was incorporated in the Kitching & Eckess Department Store.
