  • Judge Kanner moved to Martin County in 1925 and became the first state attorney for the 21st Judicial Circuit. Judge Kanner served as the attorney for the City of Stuart, for Martin County, and for the county school board. He also served as a representative of Martin County in the Florida Legislature and a state senator of the 33rd District. In 1941, he was appointed Circuit Judge of the 9th Judicial District and was appointed to the Second District Court of Appeal in 1957, where he later became the first chief judge of the Second District Court of Appeal.

In 1906, he came to Stuart due to ill health and in 1908 became the justice of the peace of Stuart and in 1910, county judge, resigning in 1914. Ernie Lyons mentioned him frequently in his columns, describing him as Stuart's first naturalist, an atheist (and member of the Presbyterian Church) with an extensive taxidermy collection. He lived in a small frame cottage, Mango Lodge, on Frazier Creek, near the intersection of West Fifth and US 1. Daughter Cornelia Belden Adams taught in Chicago schools and wintered in Stuart later in life.
