"Putting luscious grapefruit in field boxes for Yankee breakfast table use. Nowhere else in the world are such fine grapefruit raised as in this Indian River country." Packing crates stamped "Deerfield Groves June 1919." Listed in FPC record book 2 (G) as "7507-20 Grapefruit in Pack House Wabasso L." Published in the 1926 birthday event program with the caption "Gathering grapefruit in the Niagara Grove ten miles from Stuart." Presented by the Stuart Commercial Club to the United States Government Engineers at a public hearing (16 Jan 1923) in Stuart, Florida as part of a report requesting aid for a deep water harbor. -
Patsy McCord next to grapefruit tree, 1910
Mary "Patsy" McCord (1883-1953) stands holding a grapefruit branch in an orchard. Patsy McCord worked as a secretary for the Palm Beach Land Co. The Palm Beach Land Co., established by C. C. Chillingworth in 1910, was an early land development business and played a major role in bringing pioneer landowners and businesses to Stuart and Palm City areas. McCord also worked as an office deputy for the Stuart Sheriff's department and was an active member of many organizations in the community.
