Confusion Corner and Dyer's Dry Goods, 1955
Dyer's Dry Goods opened in 1914 and closed in 1982 as the Dyer's Department Store. As of 2025, the building still stands at 10 SW Ocean Blvd (at Confusion Corner), unoccupied. Also visible is Sunrise Apartments (located at the corner of Camden Avenue and Ocean Boulevard, 400 SW Camden Ave) and across the road is the Hayes Building housing Willy's Jeeps and a service station offering welding. -
Rice's Restaurant and Standard Oil Station, 1950
William Rice remodeled the original Roebuck Building located on U.S. 1 near Frazier Creek and reopened it as Rice's Hotel & Restaurant in November of 1945. Rice's Market, on the first floor of the hotel and restaurant, was added in September 1949 and a Standard Oil Service station was built next door in November 1949. Rice Hotel was closed in 1956. FFV (Famous Foods of Virginia) Cookies & Crackers truck visible in the background, parked next to Rice's Restaurant. Signs in front of the Standard Oil station include "Mobiloil world's record holder" and "Clean rest rooms, white & colored, cold ice water."
