Calla Lily field, Backus Plantation, c. 1935
Field of calla lilies. Catherine and George Backus built the Backus Plantation in 1911 on the South Fork. Catherine was a prominent sculptor in Minnesota. While she doesn't appear to have continued her art, she is credited with establishing one of the first commercial flower farms and the first to use artificial lights to control flower development. -

Farmer rides in horse or mule drawn plow. Published in A Pictorial History of Palm City, Florida written by Sandra Thurlow and Jacqui Thurlow-Lippisch (p. 99) with the following caption: "John DeLano harvests hay on his Palm City Farm."
DeLano was a local pioneer. He moved to Palm City from Montana in 1912. After arriving, he helped to market the Palm City Farms development and assisted with promotional picnics and other events presented by the Palm Beach Land Company. DeLano moved to Stuart after selling his farm in 1925. -
