  • Photograph published in Gilbert's Bar House Of Refuge - Home Of History by Sandra Henderson Thurlow and Deanna Wintercorn Thurlow (p. 20) with the caption "Susan Bessey stands on the dock at Gilbert's Bar House of Refuge with her sister Bessie Shackleford sitting beside her. Their father, W. A. Corbin (1828-1908), sits on the porch. This photograph taken by Mr. and Mrs. Will Harris of Walton, in 1898, is the best known photograph of Gilbert's Bar House of Refuge before the upper row of windows were added around 1911."
