Title

First Lyric Theatre, c. 1916

Description

Small building on Osceola Street near Haney Circle, built by John C. Hancock (1858-1948). Since electricity was not installed in Stuart at that time, it had its own power generator. Films, plays, and other entertainments were offered. After the Lyric Theatre moved into a new building in 1917, this building was used for several purposes.

Published in the Stuart News (15 March 1926) and in the 25th Historical Edition (9 Nov 1950), with the caption "This fine building housed Stuart's first playhouse which opened its doors in the spring of 1914. Forty feet square and with a seating capacity of 250, it then seemed decades ahead of the needs of the 150 people scattered over a wide area in this section. However, within 10 years the town had not only outgrown this building but a newer one, built later on the site of the present Lyric. The fine edifice which stands today was a boom venture of J.C. Hancock and his son, Fred, who had built and operated the former Lyrics."
