Greene's Dry Good Store portrait, 1955

Description

Group portrait taken at Greene's Dry Goods Store in downtown Stuart. The group poses near a wall of shoe boxes and in front of signs for Van Heusen and Hanes shirts. Greene’s Dry Goods store opened in downtown Stuart in 1940 between the Lyric Theatre and Minschke Building and with entrances on both Flagler and Osceola avenues. The slogan of Greene’s was “Where Quality Meets Economy.” Greene’s Dry Goods remained opened for 62 years, closing its doors in 1986.

Published in the Stuart News (6 Oct 1955) with a caption reading "Here is the staff that operates Greene's Dry Goods, Inc., here. They are (left to right, seated) Mrs. Walter L. Wells, Mrs. H. J. Greene and City Commissioner Robert Greene; (standing) Mrs. Exa Spires, Fred Bentel, Mrs. Edith Johnson and Mrs. Frank Quisenberry."

The seated individuals are the owners. In the center is Cecia Mae Stuart Greene (1906-1997), who took over the business after her husband died in 1944. On the left is daughter Minnie Louise Greene Wells and on the right son Robert E. Greene (1928-2016).
