Item

Title

Miss Music and court, 1950

Description

Published in the Stuart News (23 March 1950, p. 9) with the caption: "Miss Dorothy Sullivan, candidate of the Stuart Lions Club, was crowned 'Miss Music of 1950' at the campaign-ending coronation party at the Stuart Civic Center Friday night. Mayor D.W. King, Jr., standing behind the seated queen, did the crowning. The queen's attendants, left to right, are Miss Delores Law, Miss Lorraine Lovell, Miss Ernestine Ricou and Mrs. Edith S. Moore, all of whom were candidates in the contest. Sixth candidate, Miss Alice Crane of Salerno, was absent."

Sponsored by the Stuart Jaycee-Ettes, the Miss Music contest (c. 1949-1950) included young women, each sponsored by a local organization or business, who raised funds for the benefit of the Martin County High School band's spring trip to a state contest. The public "voted" by donating a penny for each vote.
