Item

Title

Sewall's Point post office and pier, c. 1895

Description

Pier at Sewall's Point with the home of Henry and Abbie Sewall. Their home was built in 1889 and established as the Sewall's Point Post Office in 1891. Around 1913, the building was taken by barge to Port Sewall to make a home for Capt. Henry Sewall's nephew, Maxwell B. Smith (1881-1935) and his new wife, Caroline Saul Smith (1886-1986). The Board of County Commissioners saved the historic building from demolition in 2006 and it was moved to Indian Riverside Park. In 2009, the Sewall's Point Post Office building was added to the Martin County Register of Historic Landmarks.
