Possible fountain or well, c. 1905

Item

Title

Possible fountain or well, c. 1905

Description

View of dirt road alongside a waterway with a possible fountain, well, or small pond in the foreground. The road may be Indian River Drive and the photo may have been taken near Ruxton Plantation in Eden. "Gordon's Gossip" column in The Stuart News (August 26th, 1954, page 15) does mention that there was once an artisanal well located at the Ruxton/Maribel Plantation property. According to the column, back in the early 1900s, people would travel for miles around to collect water from the fountain, which was said to cure boils known as "Florida sores." The well appears to have dried up sometime before 1920 and the fountain was eventually dismantled by the Edason family in the 1940s. Poor copy.
