Title
Stuart Post Office, c. 1905
Description
Broster Kitching originally established the rooming house Stuart House (later the Stuart Hotel) in the late 1880s. Flag draped over railing. After he became postmaster in 1894, the house also became the post office. He is pictured here standing on the right.
William Dowling McFarlan Jr. (1836-1925), brother Robert M. McFarlan (1843–1914), and cousin Louis Cass McFarlan (1850-1913) and his wife Lorena Maule McFarlan (1873-1962) and young son were regular winter visitors to Stuart from their home in Pennsylvania, between 1895 through about 1910. Both William, a retired merchant, and Louis, a cloth merchant, purchased several properties in Stuart between 1904 and 1907.
